Brown Diamond Engagement Ring
Diamond Purchasing Guidelines
The four C’s of diamond, color, clarity, cut and carat weight ought to be given attention when you buy any type of jewelry like diamond earrings or diamond rings. These four characteristics are the grounds to determine the quality of a diamond. The diamond will be regarded as beautiful and will consequently charge more if all four are ranked high.
Diamond color
The finest diamond jewelries are nearly clear since traditionally, it is graded on lack of color. Actually, the grade in “white” diamond jewelry is soft shades of yellow, gray and brown. To convey the color, an alphabetical chart from D to Z is used. To have a grasp of the differences in diamond color chart, contrast a glass of clear water against a glass of water which has a drop or two of lemonade. A rather complete representation of color diffusion in diamonds is seen in this color scale:
D-F: Without color
G-I: Near colorless
J-K: Faint color
L-R: Noticeable color
S-Z: Obvious color
Fancy color diamonds are the ones whose color saturations move beyond Z, or have a completely different hue than brown, gray or yellow. The bases for grading fancy colors are the intensity of the coloring and how much it is. Diamonds differ in color; they may be pink blue, purple, yellow, black or each color of the rainbow. White diamonds are usually less uncommon than fancy diamonds.
Diamond clarity
The rate that indicates description of the imperfections and blemishes of the diamond is clarity. The diamond with fewer imperfections and blemishes is considered more valuable. Clarity is important that it has an influence on the diamond’s luminosity. When there are inclusions in the diamond, it can obstruct the light from reflecting inside the stone, which is the attribute that provides brilliant beauty to the diamond.
According to the observation of a trained gemologist, here are diamond clarity grades listed from best to least:
FL (flawless): There are zero visible flaws or blemishes of any kind, in and out of the diamond, under 10-power magnification.
IF (internally flawless): No internal blemishes are seen but has some external or surface blemishes such as a miniscule abrasion, under 10-power magnification.
VVS-1 & 2 (very, very slightly included): This diamond has very minute intrusions, which even a trained gemologist has trouble seeing, under 10-power magnification.
VS-1 & 2 (very slightly included): This stone has minor inclusions which, under 10-power magnification, are moderately challenging to discover.
SI-1 & 2 (slightly included): Under 10-power magnification, the blemishes of this diamond are fairly easily seen; without magnification, they are extremely hard for a gemologist to determine.
SI-3 (slightly included): Part of this group are diamonds that fall on the border between SI-2 and I-1.
I-1, 2 & 3 (included): Blemishes in this stone are noticeable without magnification.
Diamond clarity enhancement
Treatments are done to some diamonds to enhance the clarity, as mentioned in a product description. In the item description of an individual piece of jewelry, Overstock.com will determine clarity-enhanced stones. The method goes like this:
To decrease their visibility, a very small quantity of high-refractive-index glass material is introduced into surface-reaching feathers. The effects of this treatment are effectively seen on very thin crevices and fissures. The diamond is still regarded as natural because its natural color is not impacted by this process. Since only microscopic quantities of filler are used, this process does not add weight to the diamond. You will notice a “flash effect” when you watch a clarity-enhanced diamond nearly parallel to the plane of the filled structure. Against a bright background, the flash effect usually appears blue; while against a dark background it appears yellow or orange. It is generally just the two colors and does not include a complete array of color. Under a focused beam of extreme light, this optical effect is best seen with ten times magnification.
It has been established by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), after extensive research, that the filler material may be destroyed by high temperature or acids but is stable within standard wear conditions. To easily avoid this damage, get rid of clarity-enhanced diamonds before repair work is carried out near the diamond.
Diamond cut chart
Shape, proportion, polish and symmetry – these are the categories of diamond cut. Great significance is given to a diamond’s shape and proportion when cutting the stone to its finest appearance. What influences how a diamond shines or “scintillates” is its shape and proportion; brightness is mirrored and refracted within the stone and this is the factor for its sparkle. The face-up appearance of the diamond greatly differs with respect to the depth or shallowness of the stone’s cut. The way in which the brightness enters and exits the sides of the diamond determines its polish. Both the length to width ratio and depth percentages determines the symmetry of the stone. For stones, “ideal cut” is the best.
Diamond carat weight
Carat is the word used to describe the weight measurement of diamonds. When referring to a single diamond, the abbreviation “ct” or “CT” can be used. When the diamond jewelry is arranged with multiple stones, the letters “TDW” is put in, which means “total diamond weight”. To identify a 3-stone diamond anniversary ring, “1ct TDW” is used; for a solitaire diamond engagement ring, it is “1ct”. (Note: To make reference to gold’s purity, the word used is not carat but “karat” and is abbreviated “k”. So, diamond jewelry may be a 1ct in a 22k setting.)
Most people do not find it simple to equate carat weight with an actual size. A brief guide for evaluating carat weight to millimeters is included here. In the example here, princess cut and round diamonds are used. There will be significant variations derived from the sample measurements depending on the differences in the diamond depth, cut and shape of a specific stone.
